With the 100-year anniversary of the sinking of RMS Titanic just behind us, one might think that would be the end of current discussion on the topic, at least until next year. Now, Australian billionaire Clive Palmer has plans to build new Titanic by the end of 2016.
“It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems,” Palmer told Bloomberg Business Week in an email over the weekend. “We have invited the Chinese navy to escort Titanic II on its maiden voyage to New York.”
The original Titanic, commissioned by White Star Line, was the largest liner in the world at the time. Titanic 2 will have the same dimensions as the original Titanic, with 840 rooms on nine decks as well as gymnasiums, swimming pools, libraries and restaurants.
Modern-day equivalent: about the same size as Royal Caribbean’s former Empress of the Seas, hovering around 50,000 tons.
