2018 Wave Season Results: Travel Pro Survey Reveals New Cruise Booking Trends
Wave season is winding down and just about behind us. It’s about the end of that time of the year when cruise lines book up to 50% of the year’s volume. Looking back, we have observations, results and thoughts from the 2018 wave season results. This will be one reported to be have been extraordinarly busy: a fact that is meaningless to you. New cruise booking trends revealed this year, on the other hand, are worth considering for a number of reasons.
Cruises are continuing to soar as a popular vacation choice for North Americans,” said Ninan Chacko, CEO of Travel Leaders Group in a press release (full text below), adding “More and more consumers are recognizing the ease, value and extraordinary experiences a cruise vacation can provide, not only for fun in the sun but also the opportunity to see some truly extraordinary parts of the world.
Significant Cruise Booking Trends:
- Alaska Is Bigger Than We Thought– An interesting first for Alaska: Alaska cruises recently ranked as the most-booked domestic vacation, beating out Orlando and Las Vegas. Actually, if Alaska had tied with eternally popular Orlando and Las Vegas that would have been a first too. For (usually more expensive) Alaska to jump ahead of those two popular land destinations speaks to the value of a cruise.
- Caribbean Still Solid- Caribbean cruises maintained the top spot but European river cruises moved up to third and Med cruises jumped from number eight last year to number four this year. Here is where we see two, maybe three factors at work: More choices/ships in the Caribbean bring more travelers. Perhaps in an abundance of caution, cruise lines discounted during wave season but hedged their bets with mutiple reduced deposit sales which happened to to extraordinarily well this year.
- Cuba Proving Popular-Interest in Cuba cruises jumped by 10 percentage points versus 2017 results. That’s helped by more opportunities to visit our ‘new’ neighbor that extend beyond the initial “oh this is a new island for us!” hoopla to embrace a pretty much unexplored culture for U.S. citizens. We liked it.
