Hurtigruten Expeditions‘ MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen crossed paths for the first time in their respective histories in Cambridge Bay, Canada. The two ships are battery-hybrid vessels, and MS Roald Amundsen is the world’s first hybrid battery-powered cruise ship.

The crossing took place during MS Fridtjof Nansen’s 27-day westbound Northwest Passage sailing to Nome, Alaska and MS Roald Amundsen’s 26-day eastbound Northwest Passage sailing to Halifax, Canada. The event was celebrated by guests and crew on both ships with flags, banners, and warm beverages. Hurtigruten Expeditions‘ Group CEO, Daniel Skjeldam, said that the gathering “serves as a moment to celebrate our legacy.”

Captain Terje Willassen of MS Roald Amundsen said that he was “struck by the remarkable achievements of past explorers” in the Northwest Passage. Captain Raymond Martinsen of MS Fridtjof Nansen said that he had “utmost respect” for the “enduring presence of today’s inhabitants” in the Arctic.

Hurtigruten Expeditions is guided by the “invaluable insights gained from local scientific study and communities.” During their passage, both ships will offer guests opportunities to conduct research on behalf of third-party entities with the expedition cruise line’s Citizen Science program. This year, the Hurtigruten Foundation granted funds to Red Fish Arts Studio and Oxen Expedition Engagement Network.
