Between Cruises: Wilderness England Adventures Include Gravel Biking Now

Wilderness England, a leader in sustainable and immersive outdoor adventures through England and Wales, has unveiled a range of new trips for 2025. Among the highlights is the addition of a brand-new gravel biking itinerary, offering a thrilling new way to explore the English countryside.

The new seven-day/six-night fully guided Galloway and the Lakes gravel biking itinerary strikes the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation. Starting in Scotland, the trip goes deep into the green forests and secluded glens of Galloway Forest Park before crossing the border into England to pedal through the captivating landscape of the Lake District.

“This new trip offers classic gravel biking terrain as its very best,” says Matt Loveland, Wilderness England’s managing director. “Winding tracks that meander through old woodland, open moor, paths that overlook the deep lakes formed by glacial valleys… it’s a carefully curated itinerary that incorporates world-class trails and invites our guests to explore the path less pedaled.”

Highlights of the new Gravel Biking: Galloway and the Lakes itinerary include:

  • Chance to pedal part of the Gralloch – a gravel race that takes place deep in the hills of Galloway and forms part of the UCI Gravel World Series.
  • A visit to Crafty Distillery in Galloway, which produces award-winning gin and whisky.
  • Exploration of the medley of narrow, glaciated valleys, steep-sided, heather-cloaked mountains, and rolling green fields crisscrossed by drystone walls that characterizes the Lake District National Park landscape.
  • Traverse the stunning Newlands Pass and check out the pretty village of Buttermere.
  • Take the route less traveled through Whinlatter Forest.
  • Enjoy delicious meals and cozy accommodations at some of the area’s best small hotels and restaurants.

Departure dates in 2025 are: June 14-20 and Sept. 6-12. Pricing for this tour starts from US$3,462.00 per person.

Another new addition to Wilderness England’s trip roster is the seven-day/six-night Wilderness Walking: The Lake District fully guided walking holiday. Over a week, the itinerary will explore charming villages, take guests on a boat trip across the mirrored waters of Derwent Water, and stop at Dove Cottage – the former home of William Wordsworth. Along the way, travelers should keep an eye out for wildlife as they learn about the history and rich literary heritage of the region.

Other highlights of this trip include:

  • Exploration of Duddon Valley, which is slightly off the beaten path and as such, far quieter than other, more central parts of the Lakes.
  • A hike up Lingmoor Fell – encircled by larger mountains, it offers exceptional views and interesting, enjoyable walking.
  • A visit to the picturesque village of Grasmere, location of Wordsworth’s (beautifully restored) Dove Cottage.
  • Meander through the beautiful Borrowdale Valley following an undulating path along a riverbank, through a woodland, and across a steep packhorse bridge.
  • Take a relaxing boat cruise and a lovely lakeshore walk at Derwent Water.
  • Enjoy an easy walk around the lake of Buttermere, one of the finest low-level walks in the Lake District.
  • Stays in a charming country inn and a homely country house hotel, both in prime locations in the heart of the region.

Departure dates in 2025 are available from April through September. Pricing of this tour starts from US$3,128.00 per person.

Wilderness England also recently introduced Autumn Lake District and Winter Lake District walking trips for those interested in exploring the region during the off-season.

For travelers looking to experience the charm of the English countryside under a dusting of snow, Wilderness England’s new Wilderness Walking: Winter Cotswolds offers just that.

This fully guided, five-day/four-night trip invites guests to experience the peaceful beauty of the bucolic Cotswolds in winter, when the region glows with golden light under bright, frosty skies. Taking in ancient sites and old churches, warming up in cozy, candlelit pubs, learning about the area’s wildlife, heritage, and rich literary history are all on the docket. And after days spent outside, evenings are spent in the comfort of a traditional English inn, chosen for its warm welcome, crackling fires, and delicious food.

Highlights include:

  • Explore the pretty villages of Bibury, Burford, Winchcombe, Southrop, Eastleach Martin, Eastleach Turville, and Bourton-on-the-Water.
  • Take a circular walk through the Windrush Valley.
  • Explore Belas Knap Long Barrow, said to be about 5,000 years old, and enjoy the view of Sudeley Castle, the only privately-owned castle home to an English queen’s final resting place.
  • Visit the incredible Blenheim Palace. Built between 1705 and 1722, it is the birthplace and ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill.

Departure dates in 2025 are Feb. 17-21 and Mar. 17-21. Pricing of this tour starts from US$1,985.00 per person.
