History of Costa Cruises: A World of ‘Firsts’
Founded in Italy, Costa Cruises has been a pioneer in the cruise industry for nearly 80 years. The company traces its roots back to 1854, when Giacomo Costa established Giacomo Costa fu Andrea, initially specializing in the trade of olive oil and textiles. On March 31,1948, Costa launched its first passenger voyage with the Anna C., sailing from Genoa, Italy, to Buenos Aires, Argentina, marking the beginning of a legacy dedicated to global exploration and exceptional hospitality.

Over the years, Costa has been a pioneer in cruising, paving the way with a collection of “firsts” and innovative accomplishments that set the foundation for growth throughout the industry. In 1950, Costa took a step in global cruising by offering cruise vacations from Fort Lauderdale, Florida; in the late 1990s, Costa established winter cruising in the Mediterranean; and in 2000, Costa Atlantica was the first ship in Europe to be equipped with cabins with private balconies.

In 2019, Costa launched the world’s first ships capable of being powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Continuing with this innovation, in January 2025, Costa Smeralda became the first cruise ship to bunker LNG at the port of Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Costa introduced the unique concept of “Sea Destinations” in 2024, an exclusive initiative by the cruise line that allows guests to take a journey through unique new destinations to be experienced from the perspective of the sea. Additional “firsts” for the cruise line include the first cruise company to proactively publish a sustainability report and the first cruise company to offer trips from Dubai/Emirates.

Today, Costa Cruises remains the only Italian-flagged cruise line, offering immersive cultural experiences onboard and ashore while promoting a passion for travel and positive impact on local communities. As the company celebrates 77 years of maritime excellence, Costa Cruises continues to deliver unforgettable journeys, blending Italian heritage with innovation to shape the future of cruising.
