Overloaded Cruise Ports Open “New” Choices
The Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA) led a delegation to the sister islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique to address pressing concerns in the tourism industry. Namely, the islands are getting overloaded with cruise ship passengers. The answer to this issue: spread ’em out.
The delegation discussed several key areas, including destination marketing, stakeholder communication, heritage site preservation, product development, and cultural legacy transmission. One of the primary topics was the enhancement of Carriacou’s marketing strategies. GTA Chairman Randall Dolland stressed the importance of positioning Carriacou and Petite Martinique as a distinctive and alluring destination to attract a wider spectrum of travelers. In other words, look for Carriacou and Petite Martinique to show up as what appear to be”new” islands on cruise line itineraries.
He also emphasized the need to invest in the islands’ tourism products and improve travel access. Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs Tevin Andrews assured stakeholders that the government is working on addressing their concerns, such as rebuilding the Hillsborough jetty and making night landings at the Lauriston Airport possible. The meetings concluded with a sense of optimism and renewed dedication to the holistic growth of the tourism industry in the tri-island state of Grenada.
