Pies Reign Supreme at Thanksgiving Time
Millions Spent on Pies for the Holiday Each Year

24th Annual American Pie Council National Pie Championships —

1st Place Pumpkin Pie with Salted Caramel Streusel
ORLANDO  — When people think of Thanksgiving, they may think of turkey, cranberry sauce and football. Whatever else there might be on the table during the national holiday, one thing remains true: They “leave room for pie.”
According to Nielsen Fresh, the most popular time of the year for pie purchases is, of course, Thanksgiving. Sales approach $90 million for Thanksgiving week – the next closest is $30 million for Christmas week.
For most pie lovers throughout the year, traditional flavors reign with apple, pumpkin, cherry and pecan pies making up 62 percent of all pie sales, an increase from 55 percent in 2014.
Making the best pies for the demand over the holidays takes precision, knowledge and tried and true recipes. Whether it’s grandma baking her famous pecan pie for generations of her family or a bakery-bought pumpkin pie to finish off a delicious meal, people around the country have their own traditions for this most American of holidays.
The race to create the country’s best pies is on at the competition’s 25th anniversary 2019 APC National Pie Championships. Amateur pie makers, professional bakers and chefs, as well as commercial pie companies come from around the country and Canada to vie for the title. They are judged on the American Pie Council’s strictest standards of quality on all levels of competition.
The milestone 25th-anniversary championships will be held from April 11 to 13, 2019 at the Renaissance SeaWorld Hotel in Orlando. In 2018, 714 pies were entered by 71 pie makers in three divisions. In the commercial division, Bakers Square won the most first-place ribbons while pies from Chef Kathy Hanson from the Ritz Carlton Orlando hotel won the professional division and amateur Jennifer Nystrom from Clarksville, Ohio, won the day in her category.
